故事发生在1945年，残酷的战争走向了尾声，日本颓势尽显，街头一片萧条。十九岁的里子（二阶堂富美 饰）和母亲茑江（工藤夕贵 饰）过着相依为命的生活。呼啸而来的轰炸机，飞速上涨的物价，永远空空荡荡的餐桌和填不饱的肚子，战战兢兢的生活，里子和茑江在夹缝中艰难的生存着。
银行行长市毛（长谷川博己 饰）住在母女家的隔壁，他喜欢拉小提琴，优美的琴声往往会使母女两人暂时忘记残酷的现实。市毛的妻子身处乡下，他自己独自留在东京，里子有时会去市毛家干些家务，一来二去之间，两人竟然生出了情愫。残酷的战争之中，面对短暂而难得的温情，两人都无法放开紧紧相拥的手臂。。This story starts in Italy very briefly, a young soccer player mother dies and the boy is forced to live in North America with Friends of the Mother.
