本片改编自尼古拉·果戈里(1809—1852)的早期作品、同名长篇历史小说《塔拉斯·布尔巴》。 小说塑造了哥萨克英雄布尔巴的形象,歌颂了民族解放斗争和人民爱国主义精神。 相同题材曾经由俄罗斯班底在1924年拍摄于德国。本次重拍，由苏联人民演员、乌克兰的鲍格丹·斯图普卡（Bogdan Stupka）扮演哥萨克老英雄塔拉斯·布尔巴，伊戈尔·彼得连科（Igor Petrenko）扮演老英雄的小儿子。。Vienna, 1920.
