勇作（阿部宽饰）是一位普通的工人，家庭里发生的变故导致他失去了理智出手打伤工友，因此面临着六年的漫长牢狱之灾。入狱的勇作不想连累妻子，他主动提出要和妻子离婚，给她自由让她去寻找自己的人生。 一转眼六年过去，即将出狱的勇作发现自己的心中依旧惦念着妻子的音容笑貌，他写了一封信给妻子，说如果妻子还爱着他，还想同他一起生活，那么就在家门口的旗杆上挂一缕黄手帕，如果返乡的自己没有看见黄手帕，就会自觉的离开。就这样，勇作踏上了回家的路，然而，连他自己都不知道，在这条坎坷的道路尽头，究竟会有怎样的结局在等待着他。。The film, directed and executive produced by W.
